Information Whangarei Parks
Our parks and reserves are beautiful places which provide opportunities for people of all ages to get out and enjoy our climate and environment.
We provide spaces for all leisure and recreation needs, from large sportsgrounds to smaller neighbourhood parks, playgrounds and public gardens.
To manage these different activities and their affects you may need to make a booking for activities or events that are over and above casual use such as gala days, festivals and filming.
A booking will give you the right to undertake your activity or event however it will not give you an exclusive right to the park.
It will make sure your event does not clash with arrangements others may have made within a park and that your activity goes ahead with Council support.
Some activities may require a fee and details are set out in Council’s Fees and Charges below.
Fitness training or bootcamps
We want to promote active and healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for people to engage in physical exercise on our parks.
Outdoor group exercise classes where participants are motivated to achieve fitness goals through the support and structure provided by the personal trainer along with the encouragement provided by the other members of the group are supported.
You only need approval to run fitness training or bootcamps in parks if you’re using equipment that digs into the ground, such as flags or if your group is larger than 15.
If you want to use this sort of equipment or run a larger class, you need to complete an application form.
All operators should follow our Code of Conduct for Fitness Training when using our parks.

You can also contact us to talk about locations that are or aren’t appropriate.
Other spaces are owned and maintained by private trusts such as the Matakohe Limestone Island Trust, or by the Department of Conservation.
We work together with these organisations to make sure that there is a seamless approach to managing the green space in the district.
Smoke free policy
We promote all our playgrounds, sportsfields and neighbourhood parks to be smoke free areas in the interests of protecting the environment and everyone’s health.
