Non-Emergency Numbers

The 000 number is only to be used if someone is seriously injured, in need of urgent medical help, if life or property is being threatened, or if the caller has just witnessed a serious accident or crime.

There are two non-emergency police numbers. To contact the police in situations that are not emergencies, call 131 444. This number is not valid in Victoria, where callers should contact their local police station.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is an air rescue service that provides healthcare to people in remote areas of Australia. It transports patients, runs health care clinics and provides primary health care for outlying areas. They have several medical & emergency call numbers:

Hospitals

Public hospitals have Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments which are available to treat serious problems. In the event of an emergency, patients are transferred to a public hospital. Ambulance transport is not free of charge.

A&E treats severe injuries or serious illnesses, such as loss of consciousness, severe pain, chest pain, large cuts and wounds and breathing difficulties. A&E departments are always open (24/7); no appointment is needed.
