Beaches in Sydney

The city of Sydney, Australia, is home to some of the finest and most famous beaches in the world. There are well over 100 beaches in the city, ranging in size from a few feet to several kilometres, located along the city’s Pacific Ocean coastline and its harbours, bays and rivers.

With around 70 surf beaches and dozens of harbour coves, Sydney is almost unrivalled in the world for the number and quality of beaches available.The water and sand among the city beaches, despite their popularity, are remarkably clean. The beach watch program was established in 1989 in response to community concern about the impact of sewage pollution on human health and the environment at Sydney’s ocean beaches

Sydney’s ocean beaches include the internationally renowned Bondi, Coogee and Manly. The ocean beaches are usually divided into the Northern Beaches, located north of the entrance to Sydney Harbour and the southern beaches which are in the eastern suburbs and Cronulla area. Most beach suburbs have one beach but some have more. Manly has eight beaches that range from the large 1.6-kilometre (1 mi) Ocean Beach to the tiny Fairy Bower Beach.

Palm Beach

Palm Beach is a suburb in the northern beaches region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Palm Beach is located 41 kilometres (25 mi) north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. Palm Beach sits on a peninsula at the end of Barrenjoey Road, between Pittwater and Broken Bay. The population of Palm Beach was 1,596 as at the 2011 census.

Palm Beach is sometimes colloquially referred to as ‘Palmy’; and is used for exterior filming of the soap opera Home and Away, as the fictional town of Summer Bay. It is also the subject of the newly-announced 2018 film ‘Palm Beach’.Palm Beach housing ranges from cottages to grand estates, owned by some of the country’s most affluent people. Many affluent and famous people can also be found holidaying at Palm Beach in summer.

Avalon

Avalon Beach is a northern beach side suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 37 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council, in the Northern Beaches region. The area is also known as Avalon, with the name Avalon Beach being assigned during a change in boundaries and names in the Pittwater region in 2012

Bilgola Beach

Bilgola Beach is a suburb in northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 33 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. It and Bilgola Plateauwere gazetted as suburbs in 2012 dividing the previous suburb of Bilgola.

Warriewood Beach

Warriewood is a suburb in northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Warriewood is located 26 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. Warriewood is part of the Northern Beachesregion.

Turimetta Beach

Turimetta Beach is a beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It is 350 metres long and is backed by steep bluffs. Swimming can be hazardous because of rips that usually form at the centre and both ends of the beach. The beach is not patrolled by lifeguards. Turimetta is more often than not a swimmers’ beach only. The surf quality is poor and surfers usually frequent North Narrabeen Beach to the south or Warriewood Beach to the north.

Most recently a swimmer drowned in big surf as well as a young 14yo boy requiring rescue from the rocks closer to the northern end of the beach.

The headland is a popular rock fishing spot so many shark sightings, both confirmed and unconfirmed, have occurred.

North Narrabeen Beach

North Narrabeen is a suburb in northern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 25 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. North Narrabeen is part of the Northern Beaches region.

North Narrabeen lies on the northern shores of Narrabeen lagoon, bounded by Warriewood to the north, Elanora Heights to the west and extends east to the ocean at Narrabeen Head. Narrabeen is opposite on the southern shore of the lagoon.

The northern section of Narrabeen Beach is known as North Narrabeen Beach. This ocean beach, together with the North Narrabeen Surf Lifesaving Club, are to the south of the lagoon in the suburb of Narrabeen

Collaroy Beach

Collaroy is a suburb in northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Collaroy is 22 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region.

Dee Why Beach

Dee Why is a coastal suburb of northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, 18 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district. It is the administrative centre of the local government area of Northern Beaches Council and, along with Brookvale, is considered to be the main centre of the Northern Beaches region.

North Curl Curl Beach

Fairy Bower Beach

Fairy Bower is a beach in the Manly area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Fairy Bower is an affluent area, located close to Shelly Beach (Manly) and North Head. The International School of Management Sydney (ICMS) and the Bower Surf Spot are located here. A scenic walk links Manly Beach to Fairy Bower and Shelly Beach. Jan Warhurst, a local diver, is famed for discovering a number of new species of catfish in the marine park.

Dusky Whaler sharks are seen regularly by divers in this area.

Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is a beach and its surrounding suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Bondi Beach is located 7 km (4 mi) east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Waverley Council, in the Eastern Suburbs. Bondi, North Bondi, and Bondi Junction are neighbouring suburbs. Bondi Beach is one of the most visited tourist sites in Australia.

Tamarama Beach

Tamarama is a beachside suburb, eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Tamarama is 6 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Waverley Council. Tamarama is affectionately nicknamed Glamarama (or Glamourama) by the locals, as it is a beach where wannabe trend setters come to sunbathe and swim or simply try to be seen.

Tamarama has a small ocean beach about 1 kilometre south of Bondi Beach and a couple of hundred metres north of Bronte Beach. The suburb is mostly residential and the beach and adjacent parklands have been popular places for recreation such as swimming, surfing, sunbaking and picnics for more than a century.

Bronte Beach

Bronte is a beachside suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Bronte beach is located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the Waverley Council local government area of the Eastern Suburbs.

Bronte Beach sits on Nelson Bay, surrounded by Bronte Park. Bronte offers scenic cliff-top walking paths south to Coogee via the Waverley Cemetery and north to Tamarama and Bondi Beach. The cliff-top path offers views which extend from Ben Buckler in the north to Malabar in the south. Bronte is located about 2.5 km south of Bondi Beach.

Clovelly Beach

Clovelly is a small beach-side suburb in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Clovelly is located 8 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick, within the Federal Division of Wentworth.

Clovelly is a mainly residential suburb on Clovelly Bay. Clovelly Beach is a small beach that sits on the end of the narrow bay. The bay is popular with swimmers. The bay is home to one of the first surf lifesaving clubs in the world, Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club, which was founded in 1906. Clovelly is surrounded by the suburbs of Bronte in the north, Randwick in the west and Coogee in the south.

Coogee Beach

Coogee is a beachside suburb of local government area City of Randwick 8 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is also a part of the Eastern Suburbs region.

The Tasman Sea and Coogee Bay along with Coogee Beach lie towards the eastern side of the suburb. The beach is popular among families and famous for its safe swimming conditions. The boundaries of Coogee are formed mainly by Clovelly Road, Carrington Road and Rainbow Street, with arbitrary lines drawn to join these thoroughfares to the coast in the north-east and south-east corners.

Cronulla Beach

Boasting numerous surf beaches and swimming spots, the suburb attracts both tourists and Greater Sydney residents. Maroubra Beach

Little Bay is a coastal suburb, to the north of Botany Bay. The suburb takes its name from the geographical formation called Little Bay, which also features a small beach. The Prince Henry Hospital was a famous landmark once located at Little Bay.

Phillip Bay Beach

Phillip Bay is a suburb in south-eastern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 13 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick. .

Kurnell Boat Harbour

Kurnell is a suburb in Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 21.4 kilometres (13.3 mi) south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire along the east coast. Cronulla and Woolooware are the only adjacent suburbs. La Perouse is located opposite, on the northern headland of Botany Bay. The Cronulla sand dunes is on the south eastern headland of Botany Bay. The eastern side of the peninsula is part of Botany Bay National Park, and Towra Point Nature Reserve is located on the western side of the suburb.

Wanda Beach
