Gboard’s Handwriting Recognition Feature Now Makes Less Mistakes

Handwriting recognition can be a bit tricky as the system would need to be able to recognize various styles of handwriting. As we all have different styles, some of which can be messier than both, it is understandable that existing handwriting recognition systems can make mistakes every now and then.

However Google thinks that they might have improved on the tech greatly, at least as far as its Gboard keyboard app is concerned. According to Google, they have updated its Gboard app where through the use of AI, they have improved upon its handwriting recognition skills where they claim that it now makes 20-40% fewer mistakes than before.

According to Google, “Since Gboard is used on a wide variety of devices and screen resolutions our first step is to normalize the touch-point coordinates. Then, in order to capture the shape of the data accurately, we convert the sequence of points into a sequence of cubic Bézier curves to use as inputs to a recurrent neural network (RNN) that is trained to accurately identify the character being written (more on that step below).”

That being said, Google isn’t quite done with their progress on the feature yet and writes, “We will continue to push the envelope beyond improving the latin-script language recognizers. The Handwriting Team is already hard at work launching new models for all our supported handwriting languages in Gboard.”
