Google Starts Updating Its Apps To Support Foldable Displays
The last time we saw Google update Android with support for the notch, we saw the Pixel 3 XL launch with a notch. Now it looks like Google could potentially be looking to try their hand at foldable smartphones. This is thanks to Google recently rolling out support for Android Foldables on its Google Photos app.
For those unfamiliar, back in 2018, Google did announce that Android would soon support foldable devices, and now it looks like that support is happening. That being said, the only foldable smartphone in the market right now is the Samsung Galaxy Fold, so we imagine that this update will probably only apply to a very small subset of users, but it is good news for those users as some of their apps will play nice with their foldable screens.
Samsung is not alone in making foldable smartphones as Huawei had also previously announced their own foldable in the form of the Mate X, which is expected to be released some time later this year. As to whether or not Google themselves will release a foldable smartphone, that remains to be seen.
Google did previously patent what seems to be a foldable smartphone, but whether it goes from patent to reality is another story.
