Apple unveiled a new 10.5in iPad Air and iPad mini today.

Apple unexpectedly decided to announce new iPad models today. I saw “unexpectedly” because Apple held no event to unveil the new iPads. Apple is holding an event later this month, but now it’s clear from today’s iPad launch, that event will focus solely on Apple’s upcoming new streaming video service and news subscription service.

As you can imagine, because Apple didn’t hold an event to unveil the new iPads today, they are seen as relatively minor products in the company’s eyes. However, fans of the iPad will be glad to see updates to Apple’s non-Pro iPad lineup.

Announcing the new products, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said: “iPad continues to provide magical new experiences for a growing range of uses where it is the absolute best device, from playing games in augmented reality to note-taking and drawing with Apple Pencil, from streaming HD movies and editing 4K films to learning to develop apps with Swift Playgrounds. Today the iPad family takes two big leaps forward with an all-new 10.5-inch iPad Air that brings high-end size, features and performance at a breakthrough price, and a major upgrade to the 7.9-inch iPad mini, which also brings Apple Pencil, Retina display and the A12 Bionic chip to the many customers that love its compact size.”

So, what’s everything new about the iPads Apple unveiled today?

The New 10.5in iPad Air

The iPad Air gets an update with a new screen size. The new 10.5in iPad Air comes in at a larger size than the previous 9.7in iPad Air. But for all intents and purposes, this new 10.5in iPad Air is simply a modified version of Apple’s old 10.5in iPad Pro for Touch ID.

The new 10.5in iPad Air comes in silver, space grey, or gold and 64GB or 256GB storage options. It features a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, Lightning connection, and an A12 Bionic chip. The iPad Air comes in both Wi-Fi and cellular models and it supports the first generation Apple Pencil.

The new iPad mini

The other iPad Apple introduced today was an updated iPad mini. This is probably the product that most fans will be excited about as Apple hasn’t updated the iPad mini since 2017. That means for almost two years the iPad mini Apple has sold has been stuck with the ancient A8 processor.

The new iPad mini announced today gives the mini the latest A12 Bionic chipset, a new advanced Retina display panel with TrueTone technology, and original Apple Pencil support. It too comes in silver, space grey, or gold and 64GB or 256GB storage options. It also offers Wi-Fi and cellular variants.
