LG’s Software Upgrade Center Hasn’t Delivered On Its Promise Of Fast Updates
The fragmentation in Android OS updates often sees users having to wait a considerable amount of time for software updates. To fix this problem for its customers, LG launched a Software Upgrade Center about a year ago with the promise of speeding up Android updates for people who own LG smartphones. It turns out that the center hasn’t really delivered on that promise.
When LG announced this ‘Global Software Upgrade Center,” it said that this will be the industry’s “first such facility aimed at providing customers worldwide with faster, timelier smartphone operating system and software updates.” Its performance leaves a lot to be desired, though.
As ComputerWorld notes, the first release from the Software Upgrade Center was Android 8.0 Oreo for the LG G6 in the United States. This firmware was released for the device almost nine months after Google had initially rolled it out. It took another six months to get the update for the G5. Even though LG released the V50 over two months after Pie was released, the handset shipped with Android 8.1 Oreo, and the handset has still not received Pie.
It has actually been over 250 days since Google released Pie and LG hasn’t delivered a single update to its compatible devices. The LG G7 One is an exception as it receives Google’s assistance for fast updates. LG hasn’t commented on the matter but it’s clear that the whole Software Upgrade Center announcement may have been more for style than substance.
