Lyft Is Trying Out Car Rentals In San Francisco
Lyft’s offerings are now far more than just enabling you to get a ride from one place to another. It has been leading the electric scooter charge in the country and now it’s working on yet another way to eliminate the need for people to own a car. Lyft is trying out longer term car rentals with a small group of customers in San Francisco.
“We’ve added bikes, scooters, and public transit info into the app in cities across the country, and we’re currently testing a small-scale rental option for long-distance trips, like a weekend away,” a spokesperson for the company confirmed to Engadget. It’s yet another multimodal option that Lyft is offering to customers so that they can use its service for any kind of trip.
Since this service is being run on a trial basis right now, the price hasn’t really been settled, but the first few customers who have been allowed longer-term rentals have to pay around $60 per day for a sedan and $100 per day for an SUV. They will also be able to claim up to $20 in Lyft credit for rides to the company’s rental lot in the Mission. Customers will also be able to request accessories like tire chains and bike racks at no extra cost.
Lyft hasn’t confirmed right now how many people have been invited to test this service and how many cars it has in the rental fleet. What’s known is that these are brand new cars and not vehicles that are owned by driver’s in Lyft’s ride-sharing network. It doesn’t offer an hourly rental option and there’s no cap on the number of miles customers can drive in a day.
