Netflix Has Removed AirPlay Support
AirPlay is one of the easiest ways to share content from your Apple device to your Apple TV. So you could easily watch videos you took on an iPhone with this feature and even stream content from apps on the big screen through AirPlay. That will no longer be possible now for Netflix. The company has confirmed that it has removed AirPlay support this past week.
Netflix has confirmed to The Verge that it has removed support for AirPlay because of a “technical limitation.” However, it’s not a technical limitation in the true sense of the word. This is because of something that Apple has done this year.
The company has teamed up with major TV brands so that AirPlay 2 can send shows directly to their 2019 models with a firmware update due later this year. A Netflix spokesperson told the scribe that AirPlay 2 doesn’t have digital identifies which will enable Netflix to tell those TVs apart. This means that the company can’t certify its users are getting the best Netflix experience possible when casting content to those new TVs.
So it’s not like this will only apply to the newer TV sets from the companies that Apple has partnered with this year. Apple TV users are out of luck as well. This change won’t allow Apple TV users to cast Netflix either. “We can’t distinguish which device is which, we can’t actually certify the devices… so we’ve had to just shut down support for it,” a spokesperson for the company said. Netflix has also updated its official support page to confirm that “AirPlay is no longer supported for use with Netflix.”
