New York City’s MTA Transit System Gets Apple Pay This Summer

It was expected that New York City would finally start accepting Apple Pay for its transit system and it seems that the day won’t be far before commuters can pay on the go with Apple Pay. The company’s CEO Tim Cook said during Apple’s Q2 earnings call this week that Apple Pay will be rolling out to New York City’s MTA transit system in “early summer” of 2019.

Cook confirmed to investors during Apple’s Q2 earnings call that the company’s mobile payments system will be supported on the MTA transit system of New York City this summer. Commuters will thus be able to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay instantly.

MTA’s support for contactless payments may not be limited to Apple Pay, though, but it’s obvious why Cook would only mention his company’s service in the earnings call. The MTA could possibly support contactless credit cards in addition to competing services like Google Pay.

The system is called OMNY and it’s due to be launched on May 31st but will be available initially only on the Staten Island buses and the 4 5 6 subway lines between Grand Central 42 Street and Atlantic Av. Barclays Ctr. It won’t be until 2020 before the full system rollout and until then, it won’t be possible to use any passes or discounted fares.
