It was recently reported that a pirated copy of Avengers: Endgame was making its rounds on the internet. However, it was suggested that it might not be a big deal because the copy was said to be poorly recorded and somewhat unwatchable, meaning that most people would probably still prefer to watch it in the cinema.
Unfortunately for some in the Philippines, local cable TV provider Orient Cable decided to air the pirated copy of the movie about a day after its premiere in the country. This is a big deal because for those who might have been casually flipping through channels, it ended up spoiling the movie for them. Plus let’s not forget that it is also completely illegal.
It was also mentioned that the copy that was aired was a bad copy, meaning that not only did viewers have the movie spoiled for them, but it was spoiled for them in a bad way. The company has since been sued by local movie house Teatro de Dapitan and following the police report, they pulled the movie from the air. Oddly enough, they then replaced it with a pirated copy of Philippine superhero movie Captain Barbel.
It is unclear what kind of repercussions the company could face, especially given that Disney is very protective of its intellectual property, but it is astounding that they thought that this was a good idea and that they could get away with it. In the meantime, it appears that piracy or not, Avengers: Endgame has managed to smash box office records with some predicting it could be on its way to breaking the $2 billion mark.
