YouTube CEO Agrees 2018 Rewind Video Was ‘Cringey’
YouTube has a tradition of putting up a Rewind video towards the end of every year which recaps some of the biggest highlights of the platform for the outgoing year. It did the same in 2018 but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The 2018 Rewind video actually ended up breaking the record for the most disliked video on YouTube. It broke the record merely a week after it was posted in December and so far has amassed 15 million dislikes. The feedback was loud and clear from users and YouTube has now taken note.
The video was criticized by both fans and creators as they felt it didn’t accurately show the current culture on the platform. It had plenty of famous creators hanging out and participating in cringeworthy sketches together but some of the biggest creators (*cough*PewDiePie*cough*) were not even mentioned in passing, let alone included.
There was no mention of the PewDiePie vs T-Series battle that has captivated a good chunk of YouTube’s audience. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki referred to the criticism in a post on the company’s official blog, saying that even her kids told her that YouTube’s 2018 Rewind was “cringey.”
She promised that the company will do better in 2019, adding that “We hear you that it didn’t accurately show the year’s key moments, nor did it reflect the YouTube you know. We’ll do better to tell our story in 2019.”
