YouTube Originals Will Soon Be Free And Ad-Supported

Previously if you wanted to watch YouTube Originals, you’d have to pay a subscription for it. It made sense because not only would this help creators earn more money, but it would also turn the company into a Netflix competitor with their own series of original programming and content, but it seems that it might not have taken off the way YouTube wanted.

So much so that YouTube has since announced and confirmed that they will soon be making all of its Originals content free and available to all users, and that instead of paying for it, it will be just like other YouTube videos where revenue will be generated through ads. This means that users will soon be able to access previously-exclusive content like Cobra Kai, which YouTube has recently confirmed will be renewed for a third season.

According to YouTube, “This gives advertisers more opportunities to engage with a broader audience, drive meaningful results and align with top Hollywood talent and YouTube creators.” The company had back in 2018 confirmed that they will be shifting its Originals to being ad-supported, and it looks like it is finally happening.

It was also previously reported that YouTube would be scaling back on its investment into its Originals content, where some upcoming series was cancelled. Speaking at the YouTube Brandcast event, the company’s Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl was quoted as saying, “While every other media company is racing to put their content behind the paywall, we’re headed in the opposite direction by making our original content available for free.”
